In the spirit of academic cooperation, Kanehisa Laboratories is pleased to provide academic users with various KEGG products free of charge or at a substantial rebate. To ensure the ongoing financial support of the KEGG project, Kanehisa Laboratories is also providing KEGG products to commercial users for a fee. To ensure fairness, as well as the long-term maintainability of the KEGG project, only bona fide academic projects may qualify. This document describes the Kanehisa Laboratory's policy concerning “Fair Use” of KEGG data by commercial entities.
Kanehisa Laboratories has appointed Pathway Solutions Inc. as its exclusive worldwide licensing agent. For any questions, we invite you to contact Pathway Solutions at licensing@pathway.jp. In this document, “we”, “our”, etc., refers to Pathway Solutions as well as the Kanehisa Laboratory. “You” refers to you, a licensee or potential licensee of any of our products.
“Fair Use” is the term we use when we believe that your use of KEGG data falls under conditions similar to those set forth under fair use laws of the United States. This document describes our interpretation of fair use as related to KEGG data in enough detail to be practical to our users.
Should your use of KEGG clearly fall under any of the categories below, we consider that you do not require any license agreement or additional explicit permission from us. Should your use of KEGG data not clearly fall into any of the categories described below, we ask that you contact us at licensing@pathway.jp to discuss your situation with us, or for information about how to abtain a license. We offer free academic licenses and commercial licenses that cover various use cases.
Note that as per this Fair Use Policy, any use of KEGG data that is not described here and for which you have not entered into an explicit agreement with us shall be considered as infringement.
We divide the use of KEGG into three areas, based on where the data is located. Note that these locations are the original data sources, any data located at any of the KEGG mirror sites also fall under these constraints.
You may issue a maximum of 25 requests for evaluation purposes. If designing or distributing products for use with the KEGG API, you are required to obtain a KEGG Developer License.
